Entry Requirements

Applicants will be selected for admission to the 5 or 6 year Medical Programme on the basis of open competition using the following criteria:

• Basic eligibility, i.e. achievement of minimum academic and English language entry requirements.
• References and life experience, i.e. work / life balance, extracurricular activities, relevant work or voluntary experience, etc.
• Performance at a structured interview.

The following requirements are the minimum standards for consideration for entry into the Undergraduate Medical Programme for the Academic Year 2017/2018. Attainment of these grades does not guarantee acceptance to the School of Medicine. Admission to the 5 or 6 Year Programme is at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

 

English Language Entry Requirements

 

Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated solely in a native English speaking country must satisfy an English language proficiency requirement through one of the following means:

6 Year Programme
IELTS - A minimum score of 6.0 overall (minimum 5.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

Applicants who achieve an IELTS (or TOEFL equivalent) score of 6.5 or equivalent are exempted from the pre-sessional English programme.

5 Year Programme
IELTS - A minimum score of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

Please note: English language qualifications are only valid for two years from the date of the test.

Exemptions: Applicants who have been solely educated in a native English speaking country and / or those who have completed the following curricula may be exempted from the English language requirement. Applicants should make contact with the Admissions Office to confirm eligibility for such an exemption.

IB Diploma                                Minimum score of 5 in Standard or Higher Level English.
(I)GCSE/GCE                             Minimum of Grade C in English.
Irish Leaving Certificate           Minimum of Grade D in Ordinary Level English.

 

Academic Entry Requirements - By Curriculum

 

 

Please note: All applicants must have completed at least 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education.

 

A-Levels

5 Year Programme 

Applicants must present three full GCE A-Levels with scores of A,B,B from the subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. All applicants must also have completed a minimum of 6 subjects at GCSE level, including a minimum of grade C in English and Mathematics.

6 Year Programme

Applicants who have completed three full GCE A-Levels, but do not meet the above subject or grade requirements may be considered for the 6 year medical programme.

 

Advanced Placements (AP)

5 Year Programme

Applicants must present three AP's with a minimum score of four points in each from the subjects; Biology, Calculus, Chemistry or Physics and achieve a competitive High School Diploma cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA).

6 Year Programme

Applicants who have completed three AP's, but do not meet the above subject or grade requirements may be considered for the 6 Year Programme.

 

American High School Diploma 

6 Year Programme

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education and achieve a minimum unweighted cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 92% or 3.60 out of a 4.0 scale (calculated over Grades 10, 11 and 12), with competitive grades in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. 

 

Indian Senior School Certificate (CBSE)

5 Year Programme

Applicants must obtain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 90% for consideration for the 5 year programme. Applicants must also have undertaken at least four of the following subjects; Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at standard XII, and hold a bone-fide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE. Applicants must have studied Mathematics to at least Standard X.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must also have undertaken at least four of the following subjects; Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at standard XII, and hold a bone-fide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE. Applicants must obtain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 80%, with not less than 75% in any individual subject. Applicants must have studied Mathematics to at least Standard X.

 

International Baccalaureate Diploma 

5 Year Programme

Applicants must attain a minimum score of 34 IB Diploma points (inclusive of bonus points) to include two Higher Level science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics. If Mathematics is presented at HL, another laboratory science subject must also be presented at Standard Level.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must attain a minimum score of 29 IB Diploma points (inclusive of bonus points). The IB Diploma must comprise of six subjects (three subjects at Higher Level and three subjects at Standard Level), subjects must include subjects must include English, Mathematics / Mathematical Studies and at least one laboratory science subject.

 

Secondary School Leaving Certificate (MENA - Tawjihiya)

6 Year Programme

Applicants must have completed at least 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education within the science stream and achieve a cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 95%.

Australia 

5 Year Programme

Applicants must attain a minimum of 95% in the Australian matriculation examination presenting Chemistry and two of the following three subjects; Biology, Mathematics and Physics in Year 12, providing that the remaining subject has been passed in Year 10 / 11.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must present the Higher School Certificate or equivalent with not less than an average of grade B in each subject. Six subjects are required which must include English, Mathematics, and a science subject, from Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The sixth subject may be presented from year 10 / 11. Tertiary Entry Requirement (TER) of 80%.

 

Canada

5 Year Programme

Applicants must have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science related field.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must have completed their high school examinations with a minimum average score of 80% and competitive grades in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Those presenting other school leaving certificates will be considered on an individual basis.

 

China 

6 Year Programme

Applicants must present the Senior High School Diploma / Chinese University Entrance Examination with very high achievement and must include English, Mathematics and two laboratory science subjects from; Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

 

Hong Kong

GCE Applicants must present three good A level passes, preferably from the subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The applicants require six subjects at GCSE level, which must include acceptable pass levels (grade C or higher) in English and Mathematics.


Hong Kong Advanced Level Certificate - Applicants must present three good A level passes, preferably from the subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The applicants must also provide a Hong Kong Certificate of Education (English). Applicants must have a minimum of six subjects including English and Mathematics. Only grades A, B, or C, (1-6) will be considered.

 

India

5 Year Programme

Applicants must obtain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 90% for consideration for the 5 year programme. Applicants must also have undertaken at least four of the following subjects; Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at standard XII, and hold a bone-fide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE. Applicants must have studied Mathematics to at least Standard X.

Malaysia

5 Year Programme

S.T.P.M. - Minimum grades of A,B,B are required for consideration. Applicants presenting the Malaysian University Matriculation Exams must have a GPA of 3.5 in one sitting in acceptable subjects or grades of A,B,B,B and English. Grades obtained in more than one sitting will be considered providing that the proximity of the examinations is in less than one year.

6 Year Programme

S.T.P.M. - Minimum grades of B,B,C are required for consideration. Applicants must present three S.T.P.M. passes (or equivalent) preferably from the subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Applicants should also have a minimum of six subjects at S.P.M. which must include acceptable pass level grades in English and Mathematics. Only grades of A, B or C (1-6) are considered to be of a pass standard.

 

United States

5 Year Programme

Applicants must have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science related field.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must present a High School Graduation Diploma with competitive marks in Biology, Chemistry and either Physics or Mathematics. It is strongly recommended that candidates also present competitive scores from one of the following standardised tests; APs, IB, SAT, SAT II or ACT.
