Entry Requirements

Applicants will be selected for admission to the 5 or 6 year Medical Programme on the basis of open competition using the following criteria:

  • Basic eligibility, i.e. achievement of minimum academic and English language entry requirements.
  • References and life experience, i.e. work / life balance, extracurricular activities, relevant work or voluntary experience, etc.
  • Performance at a structured interview.
  • The following requirements are the minimum standards for consideration for entry into the Undergraduate Medical Programme for the Academic Year 2018/2019. Attainment of these grades does not guarantee acceptance to the School of Medicine. Admission to the 5 or 6 Year Programme is at the discretion of Admissions.

     

    Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated solely in a native English speaking country must satisfy an English language proficiency requirement through one of the following means:

    5 Year Programme

    IELTS - A minimum score of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent. Please note: English language qualifications are only valid for two years from the date of the test.


    6 Year Programme

    IELTS - A minimum score of 6.0 overall (minimum 5.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

    Applicants who have been solely educated through an English language curriculum in a native English speaking country and / or those who have completed the following curricula meet the English Language Requirement for entry into the 5 or 6 Year Programmes.

    IB Diploma Minimum score of 5 in Standard or Higher Level English. (I)GCSE/GCE Minimum score of Grade C in English. Irish Leaving Certificate Minimum score of Grade D in Ordinary Level English.

     

    Hong Kong DSE Minimum of Level 5 in English.




    Please note: All applicants must have completed at least 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education.

    Australia - 5 Year Programme

    Applicants must attain a minimum of 95% in the Australian matriculation examination presenting Chemistry and two of the following three subjects; Biology, Mathematics and Physics in Year 12, providing that the remaining subject has been passed in Year 10 / 11.

    - 6 Year Programme

    Applicants must present the Higher School Certificate or equivalent with not less than an average of grade B in each subject. Six subjects are required which must include English, Mathematics, and a science subject, from Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The sixth subject may be presented from year 10 / 11. Tertiary Entry Requirement (TER) of 80%.

    Canada

    - 5 Year Programme

    Applicants must have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science related field.

    - 6 Year Programme

    Applicants must have completed their high school examinations with a minimum average score of 80% and competitive grades in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Those presenting other school leaving certificates will be considered on an individual basis.

    China 6 Year Programme

    Applicants must present the Senior High School Diploma / Chinese University Entrance Examination with very high achievement and must include English, Mathematics and two laboratory science subjects from; Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

    Hong Kong Diploma in Secondary Education (HKDSE)

    5 Year Programme Applicants must present Chemistry with a score of Level 5. In addition, they must achieve Level 5 in two subjects from the group Biology, Physics and Mathematics. A minimum score of Level 3 must be achieved in all remaining subjects. 6 Year Programme Applicants will be expected to take the 4 core subjects plus 3 elective subjects and to achieve minimum scores of Levels 5, 5 and 4 from the subjects Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics. Minimum scores of Level 3 must be achieved in all remaining subjects.

    Malaysia 5 Year Programme

    S.T.P.M. - Minimum grades of A,B,B are required for consideration. Applicants presenting the Malaysian University Matriculation Exams must have a GPA of 3.5 in one sitting in acceptable subjects or grades of A,B,B,B and English. Grades obtained in more than one sitting will be considered providing that the proximity of the examinations is in less than one year.

    6 Year Programme

    S.T.P.M. - Minimum grades of B,B,C are required for consideration. Applicants must present three S.T.P.M. passes (or equivalent) preferably from the subjects; Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Applicants should also have a minimum of six subjects at S.P.M. which must include acceptable pass level grades in English and Mathematics. Only grades of A, B or C (1-6) are considered to be of a pass standard.

    United States

    5 Year Programme

    Applicants must have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science related field.

    6 Year Programme

    Applicants must present a High School Graduation Diploma with competitive marks in Biology, Chemistry and either Physics or Mathematics. It is strongly recommended that candidates also present competitive scores from one of the following standardised tests; APs, IB, SAT, SAT II or ACT.

    Ireland - Irish Leaving Certificate 5 Year Programme

    Applicants must present a minimum of 6 subjects [2 x H4 and 4 x O6/H7] to include Chemistry at H4, either Physics or Biology at H4 and a minimum of an O6/H7 in 4 other subjects including English, Maths and one foreign language. Candidates must meet the above subject requirements and achieve a minimum score of 570 points in a single sitting.

    6 Year Programme

    Applicants must present a minimum of 6 subjects [2 x H5 and 4 x O6/H7] to include a minimum of a H5 in Chemistry or Physics or Biology and a minimum of an O6/H7 in English, Maths, a second science and one foreign language. Candidates must meet the above subject requirements and achieve a minimum of 480 points in a single sitting.

    Scotland - Scottish Highers 6 Year Programme

    Applicants must have completed the Scottish Higher Examinations with minimum grades of AAABB, which must include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English.

    Academic Entry Requirements for applicants who have completed Foundation Programmes

    Applicants who have a minimum of 12 years of school education and complete one of the following Foundation Programmes may be considered for the 6 Year Programme.

    Bellerby's College Foundation Programme 6 Year Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across the academic modules including a minimum score of 75% in Chemistry and no less than 60% in any individual module.

    Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC) 6 Year Programme

    Minimum grades AAAB in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry on the Sciences Foundation Programme.

    Liverpool International Foundation Programme 6 Year Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across all modules and no less than 65% in any individual module.

    University of St Andrews International Foundation Programme for Medicine 6 Year Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across all modules including a minimum score of 75% in chemistry and no less than 65% in any individual module. Other foundation programmes not listed above may be considered. Enquiries should be emailed to the Admissions Office.
